Welcome to Economics

What is Economics?

Economics is about how society meets people's demands for things they want to consume. Economists are interested in issues such as changing incomes, the level of taxation, why prices rise and how best to solve issues such as climate change or unemployment.

In essence, it helps you to understand developments in business, society and the world economy.

Economists ask questions like…

•  Who benefits from higher spending on schools?

•  What is the impact of the London congestion charge?

•  Is it worth getting into debt at university?

•  Does it matter if Tesco has more shops than its rivals?

•  Why are some countries rich and others poor?

•  Will a rise in income tax mean more government tax revenue?

•  Do more exports mean a better-performing economy?

Next Steps

Many students choose to continue their study of Economics at degree level or start a career in business, accountancy or government.
